How
to choose the best protein powder for muscle gain is one major
concern for many aspiring bodybuilders and muscle building enthusiasts.
With so many protein powders on the market nowadays, it's like
finding a needle in a haystack. Each person has his or her opinion
of what is best for their needs but for me the best protein powder
for muscle gain would be a protein blend. First and foremost,
what I like about protein blends is you're getting the best of
both worlds all in one single supplement.
Whey and Casein
This
combination of proteins is one of the best out there. Whey is
renowned for its instant released protein while casein is famous
for its time released protein. There are different types of whey
protein notably whey concentrate, whey isolate and hydrolyzed
whey. Whey concentrate has a biological value(BV) of 104 with
whey isolate at 154 and hydrolyzed whey at 164. Hydrolyzed whey
is basically a whey isolate but has been broken down into smaller
protein pieces using a process known as "enzymatic hydrolysis".
This stimulates an even faster digestion resulting in a more effective
shuttling of amino acids into your muscles for optimum muscle
growth. The BV values of proteins indicate the absorption rate,
the higher the number, the faster the rate and the lower the number,
the slower the rate.
As
for casein, there are different types as well notably calcium
caseinate, milk protein isolate and micellar casein and it has
a BV value of 77. Whey protein is ideal post-workout due to its
fast-acting protein for quick repair and rebuild of depleted muscle
tissues while casein protein is great pre-bed due to its sustained
release of protein to your muscles keeping your body anabolic.
Having
both of these proteins in one serving will give you a bit of both
their benefits. Taking 1-2 scoops of whey and casein together
will definitely give you the muscle recharge you need after a
workout while prolonging the muscle building with the casein protein
for a few more hours. This is what is really great about a protein
blend and it's definitely fine post-workout as well as pre-bed.
Whey,
Casein and Egg
Having
one more protein in the previous blend can give you even more
benefits. Another common blend is whey, casein and egg white protein(egg
albumen) together. Eggs rank at 100 on the biological value of
proteins so it's forth actually behind whey concentrate, whey
isolate and hydrolyzed whey. This means that eggs' protein absorption
rate is fast too. Eggs are a great muscle builder and one of the
favorite foods for bodybuilders as they are affordable, versatile
and highly nutritious. Egg white protein has an excellent profile
of amino acids without the cholesterol and fat.
Below are five of my favorite protein blend supplements. Note
that these protein blends are without artificial sweeteners so
they are totally natural.
